What Are Dental Veneers?

Dental veneers are thin laminates that are bonded directly to your natural teeth. They can be used to correct the colour of your teeth, close a gap in your smile or repair a cracked tooth. There are several common types of veneers including:

  • Porcelain – strong and stain resistant, porcelain veneers look and feel just like your natural teeth.

  • Composite resin – able to be shaded to match your natural teeth, composite resin can be sculpted in just one appointment and is a cheaper alternative to porcelain.

  • Lumineers® – digitally designed and ultra-thin, these veneers can be seamlessly applied over your teeth for a natural looking smile. No temporary veneers are necessary as there is no need for drilling or removal of enamel.

Each type of veneer has benefits that will help you make the right choice for your teeth.

The Dental Veneer Procedure

Choosing the right dentist in Hamilton to place your porcelain veneers is important as there are several steps that must be taken. The first is to make a mold of your teeth. At that same appointment, a small amount of your natural tooth enamel will need to be removed, and temporary veneers are placed. The mould of your teeth is sent to a dental lab where, over several weeks, your permanent veneers are made. Once your veneers are made and match your mold perfectly, you will have another appointment where your dentist will place your veneers.

All types of veneers are great for improving individual or multiple teeth. They fit over the front surface of your damaged or discoloured teeth and are applied with a bonding material that goes between your enamel and the inside of the veneer. Dental veneers are not removable since a layer of enamel must be removed from your teeth, but with the proper care and maintenance (brushing, flossing and regular cleanings) your veneers can last for many years.

BEFORE & AFTER

David

David came to us with two missing front teeth (the result of a trampoline accident) as well as staining on his other front teeth. He was treated using two Biohorizons implants and two porcelain veneers. The implants were placed using a CBCT guided stent and the final implant restorations were screw retained. The veneers were fabricated and delivered the same day as the final implant restorations.

BEFORE & AFTER

ahmed

Ahmed came to us with a chipped front tooth after falling off his bike. His tooth was rebuilt using a bonded resin composite restoration to match the adjacent front tooth in a same-day procedure. The restoration used a three step etch, prime and bond bonding system, and the shade was matched to the existing tooth structure. His tooth is now being monitored long-term for continued pulpal activity.

BEFORE & AFTER

PETER

Peter sustained multiple hits to his front teeth which were continually built up with filling material over the course of the patient’s life. Both of his teeth remained vital, however the restorations were continually chipping and becoming discoloured. As a long-term solution, we inserted two bonded, lab fabricated porcelain veneers.
Diagnostic wax-up and temporaries were fabricated and the final restorations were bonded in place and occlusion checked. The patient is now being followed up long term to manage grinding habits to help maintain the longevity of the veneers.
