How to Manage Sensitive Teeth

The International Dental Journal reports that approximately 57 percent of adults between the ages of 20 to 50 suffer from tooth sensitivity.

When the enamel wears down on the outside of your tooth, the tubes that connect to the inside nerves of the tooth are exposed, which is why you may be experiencing pain while drinking a hot coffee or eating ice cream. Read on to learn how you can reverse the effects of tooth sensitivity, so you can get back to enjoying all of your favourite foods without any oral discomfort.


What You Can Do to Help Prevent and Treat Tooth Sensitivity

The part of the tooth that appears above the gumline is protected by the enamel layer. A receding gumline, which can be caused by improper tooth brushing, teeth clenching or grinding, or erosion due to acid can leave the root of the tooth exposed. When this occurs, the temperatures of the foods you eat will stimulate the nerve cells of the tooth, causing sensitivity to hot and cold substances. Luckily, there are a number of ways to help soothe sensitive teeth:


  • Use a soft-bristled toothbrush - Hard-bristled brushes can cause your gums to recede, which can expose the root of the tooth and cause pain.
  • Use desensitizing toothpastes – Try brushing with Sensodyne or Crest Pro Health Enamel Shield. You can also opt for a mouth wash that contains stannous fluoride like, Perio Med, which helps protect the tubes in the teeth that are attached to the nerves. 
  • Brush properly - Hold the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to the teeth and brush in a circular motion. Don’t brush too hard, as it can wear down the tooth’s enamel and cause sensitivity. 
  • Rinse with warm water - Both cold and hot water can irritate a sensitive tooth. Try using warm water; it may feel better and prevent you from wincing.
  • Be mindful of what you eat or drink - Acidic foods and beverages can cause your tooth enamel to erode, and increase your chances of sensitivity. Try eliminating pop, wine, coffee, and fruit juice from your diet. Instead, drink plenty of water and eat acidic foods, like tomatoes and citrus fruits in moderation. If you do indulge in acidic drinks, reduce exposure by using a straw and then swishing your mouth with water. Brush your teeth 30 minutes after drinking.
