Wearing retainers at night in Hamilton Ontario

Do I Need to Wear My Retainer Every Night?

After having an orthodontic treatment, such as braces, you may wonder if you need to continue wearing your retainer or if it is necessary to wear it every night. The answer to this is not a one-size-fits-all situation. It instead depends on the factors that led to your orthodontic treatment. If you want straight teeth, your Hamilton orthodontist may recommend that you wear your retainer nightly regardless.

Why Retainers Are Used by Family Dentists in Hamilton

Retainers may be an annoyance, but they serve a valuable purpose. Regardless if you have had Invisalign® or traditional metal braces, you need the retainer to maintain the results you received from your treatments. If you do not wear it consistently, your teeth could go back to their original position, thus wasting your time and money.

The human body is amazing, and when it comes to the mouth, there is plenty to marvel at! Your teeth have their own internal memory and it takes them about one year post-braces to become permanent in their new position. During this time, your teeth will revert to their old “memory” and try to float back to their original position. The retainer keeps your teeth in place while the new memory is captured.

How Long Will I Need a Retainer?

Typically, the first three to six months after braces are the most critical for retainers. You should wear yours a minimum of 22 hours per day or until your orthodontist in Hamilton suggests switching to a retainer for nighttime use. After that, you will be required to wear it nightly for about one year.

Also, if you ever notice your retainer starts to feel tight, you should revert back to wearing it daily (at least 22 hours), because your teeth are starting to move back to their old position.

Is There Just One Type of Retainer?

There are a few different types of retainers that you may wear. These include:

  1. Bonded Retainers – Bonded retainers are made by creating a wire along the back of your teeth and then securing them so that they hold the teeth in a desired position. These can be made for upper and lower teeth. A bonded retainer may remain in place for two to five years.
  2. Hawley Retainers – These are the most well-known and used types of retainers. They use a metal wire that wraps around a series of six teeth and holds them in place. They are prescribed for upper and lower sets of teeth and can be adjusted. They are often replaced every five to eight years.
  3. Essix Retainers – These are a clear snap-on retainer that sits on top of your teeth. They last one to three years, but can easily wear down, especially if they are not cared for properly.

Regardless of how you feel or what you believe is required, it is best to speak with your orthodontist to see what they recommend for your retainer use at night and during the day.
